River snail - recovery plan

Cover of the endangered river snail recovery plan

Summary

This document is the NSW recovery plan for the river snail (Notopala sublineata).

The river snail is a medium-sized freshwater snail that has been listed as ‘endangered’ under the Fisheries Management Act 1994 and as threatened under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. The species is also listed as endangered by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

It is clear that the river snail has suffered a dramatic decline in NSW.

The species is currently considered extinct throughout its natural range. Over the last decade living specimens have only been recorded from water supply irrigation pipelines.

The recovery plan discusses the likely reasons for the decline of the river snail throughout its known range within NSW, and outlines the measures needed to recover the species and ensure its long-term viability.

This plan has been developed in accordance with the requirements of the NSW Fisheries Management Act 1994.
