Australian Grayling - Prototroctes maraena

Summary

The Australian Grayling, also known as the Cucumber Mullet or Cucumber Herring is a small to medium-sized slender fish that is endemic to south-eastern Australia.

It is a migratory species that spawns in the lower freshwaters of coastal rivers and spends approximately 6 months in coastal seas as larvae/juveniles before migrating back into freshwater rivers and streams where they remain for the rest of their lives.

The Australian Grayling has suffered dramatic declines in recent decades. In NSW, the species is listed as an endangered.

There are heavy penalties for harming, possessing, buying of selling them, or for harming their habitat.
