The Stocky Galaxias is a newly described small fish which grows to a maximum of 103mm long. It is only known to occur in the headwaters of Tantangara Creek, upstream of the Tantangara Reservoir in NSW.
Very little is known about the ecology and environmental requirements of the Stocky Galaxias. Its small distribution is restricted by the absence of salmonids. A severe decline in distribution and abundance, or extinction of the species is projected if salmonid invasion occurs in the habitat of Stocky Galaxias.
Stocky Galaxias is listed as a critically endangered species. There are heavy penalties for harming, possessing, buying or selling them, or for harming their habitat.
