Research Leader Marine Ecosystems
Biography

Rachel has a diverse research portfolio that reflects her years as a government scientist during which she addressed various Commonwealth and state priorities.

She has investigated the potential effects of seismic impacts on marine invertebrates and characterised biodiversity in Australian marine parks. She has also led over 150 collaborators to develop a suite of nationally standard methods for sampling in Australia’s oceans.

Rachel completed her PhD in 2005, investigating the effects of multiple stressors on molluscan embryos, as well as their associated chemical and behavioural protection. She then undertook a postdoc at Stony Brook University in New York where she examined the effects of harmful algae on commercially important clams.

After her return to Australia, she started work at Geoscience Australia, spending over ten years as a marine scientist working across various seabed mapping projects, after which she took on several executive roles, including Director of the Discovery and Engagement program. Rachel also has a background in science communication and is interested in the influence of media on the public perceptions of marine and Earth sciences.

Current projects

  • Advancing national standards and best practices to monitor key natural values and pressures
  • Post-flood recovery and impacts of flood-related stressors on benthic estuarine communities
