Conservation Volunteers building a Better Earth in Barrington Tops!

Barrington Tops State Forest has been selected as a priority area to receive practical care from the Conservation Volunteers Australia ‘Better Earth’ program and State Forests of NSW ‘Communities in Forests’ program.

A working forest, Barrington Tops State Forest has provided timber products for decades and also has significant environmental values, including its unique land formation and rare and threatened plant and animal communities.

Conservation Volunteers Australia is Australia’s largest practical conservation organisation, completing more than 1500 conservation projects across Australia every year.

Last year community involvement totalled 100,000 project days contributing more than $16 million of practical assistance to the preservation of the Australian environment.

State Forests and Conservation Volunteers Australia developed a joint program for conservation management activities in forests managed by State Forests. This community involvement program is called “Communities in Forests”.

From 17th May to 21st May 2004 you can help build a Better Earth by becoming a conservation volunteer and undertaking habitat surveys of the threatened Hastings River Mouse, the Broad-toothed Rat and the plant Tasmannia purpurascens. By undertaking these surveys we are better informing the management and protection of threatened species within forest communities.

Volunteering with Conservation Volunteers Australia is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people and learn new skills – while making a difference to the environment.

Conservation Volunteers Australia welcomes everyone who shares our love of the outdoors and our commitment to the Australian environment.
