Wood for winter

If your woodpile has taken a hammering this winter, there is hope and help at hand.

Forestry Corporation, formerly State Forests, has a whole forest floor full of tree heads left over after harvest that are available for firewood.

“Most of these heads come from blackbutt trees, which is generally considered a good hot burning firewood,” said acting harvesting forester for Forestry Corporation at Wauchope, Scott Mallyon.

“There is some grey gum and ironbark as well.

“All people have to do is obtain a firewood permit and map from the Wauchope office of Forestry Corporation and they are back on track for a warm winter.

“The access to Broken Bago State Forest is so good that even the family station wagon can get a load without any trouble if they stick to main roads such as 9 Tree Road, Old Highway Road and Paddock Road.”

The permits are issued for a minimum of two tonnes for $22, and $11 a tonne thereafter.

Permit holders have three months in which to gather their wood.

“This harvest area is within 2km of Wauchope, so it is close to Wauchope, and in easy reach of Port Macquarie, Beechwood and King Creek,” Mr Mallyon said.

“All we ask is that permit holders do not gather any standing dead or living timber, and watch out for loose limbs still in trees overhead.”
