Pig welfare

NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) is responsible for ensuring the policy and legislative frameworks in the state support good pig welfare outcomes.

The welfare of livestock (including pigs) in NSW is protected under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 (POCTA) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation.

There are also several Codes of Practice that are pig-specific or have pig-specific sections within them. These pertain to husbandry, transport, euthanasia, saleyards and abattoirs.
