Invasive plants and animals

Invasive plants and animals:

  • cause financial losses to or increase the cost of undertaking agriculture production and other industries
  • impact human and animal health and spread diseases
  • damage infrastructure
  • cause significant declines in and extinction of Australia’s native flora and fauna
  • impact cultural, public amenity and waterways.

The NSW Invasive Species Plan 2023–2028 identifies key deliverables to help prevent new incursions, eliminate or contain existing populations and effectively manage already widespread invasive species. Its scope includes weeds, and vertebrate and invertebrate pests in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. The Plan supports the NSW Biosecurity and Food Safety Strategy 2020–2030.
