Seeding Sydney cockles

Seeding Sydney Cockle in NSW estuaries

Sydney Cockle (Anadara trapezia) are sensitive to the salinity of estuarine water across their life cycle. Consequently, flooding can have adverse effects on populations in affected estuaries.

This project will:

  • Develop hatchery techniques to produce large numbers of post-settlement Sydney Cockle
  • Evaluate growth and survival of Sydney Cockle following seeding, including effects of release size and release habitat
  • Determine the ecological services that cockles provide at different life-stages
  • Engage with Traditional Owners in flood-affected estuaries to monitor recovering cockle beds.
