A NSW Department of Primary Industries and Animal Research Review Panel initiative

2022 Webinar series

The Animal Research Review Panel (ARRP), in partnership with NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), hosted a three-part webinar series to help educate and continue to raise awareness of the welfare of animals used in research.

Webinar 1: Research animal rehoming

31 May 2022

The Animal Research Review Panel (ARRP), in partnership with NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), hosted a webinar to help raise awareness of the processes involved and the benefits of rehoming of animals used in research. This was the first in a series of 3 webinars scheduled for 2022.

This on-line event attracted Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) members, research animal carers, researchers, animal science students, veterinarians and community members who want to ensure the rehoming needs of animals are met.

The webinar featured presentations from ARRP Member and Liberty Foundation Australia Founder, Ms Paula Wallace and guest speakers from Beagle Freedom Australia and a research establishment rehoming coordinator.

Successful rehoming requires a coordinated and cooperative approach. It is important that research, rehoming, animal welfare organisations and veterinarians work together to achieve the best outcome for animals once their research role has finished.

Webinar 2: Animal Research Statistics

9 August 2022

The second webinar hosted by the ARRP in conjunction with NSW DPI promoted the correct analysis of data related to the use of animals in research and the principles of the 3Rs as a framework for ethical decision making. This was the second in a series of 3 webinars scheduled for 2022.

This on-line event attracted AEC members, research animal carers, researchers, animal science students, veterinarians and community members.

The webinar featured presentations from the UK’s National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (the NC3Rs) and The University of Sydney about some of the evidence for the need for change and easy first steps we can adopt during committee and investigator conversations.

Correct analysis of data can help ensure your organisation is meeting it requirements under the Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes, which is based on the 3Rs of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement.

Webinar 3: Ethical Decision-Making

8 November 2022

The final webinar in 2022 hosted by the ARRP in conjunction with NSW DPI explored what ethical decision making really is, how it shapes an AEC’s responsibilities and guides an AEC’s decisions to ensure that the care and use of animals for scientific purposes is ethically acceptable, whilst balancing the potential effects on the wellbeing of the animals involved with the potential benefits to humans, animals or the environment.

This on-line event attracted AEC members, research animal carers, researchers, animal science students, veterinarians, and community members.

The webinar featured presentations from Macquarie University’s Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics (CAVE), an experienced veterinarian and animal welfare officer from the CSIRO and a volunteer managing solicitor with the Animal Defenders Office in Canberra.
