Energy Efficiency Solutions Program Logic

Aim

The project aim is to reduce industry vulnerability to rising energy costs, increase sector/farm profitability and improved competitiveness of NSW primary industries.

Objectives

  1. Reduce exposure of primary industries to energy related business risk
  2. Better inform industry on the merits of a range of new technologies, equipment and production systems in the context of rising energy costs for energy intensive industries
  3. Provide examples of real world energy efficiency approaches that work, providing increased investment certainty and enabling dissemination of these lessons to the broader sector
  4. Reduce risks associated with the early adoption of energy efficiency options in agriculture

Activities

  1. Identify those agricultural sectors in NSW most exposed and sensitive to increases in energy related input costs both now and into the future.
  2. Identify trends in energy productivity and explore economically viable opportunities to improve performance.
  3. Identify barriers to improving energy productivity and explore strategies to overcome these.
  4. Identify, fund and oversee the piloting of a series of projects to improve energy productivity in vulnerable intensive industry sectors.
  5. In conjunction with relevant partners develop and deliver a relevant and practical energy focused education and extension program aimed at improving energy efficiency in the extensive and irrigated sectors of NSW.

Outcomes

Short term

Business case for pilot investment made.

Challenges and potential barriers to improve energy performance for key sectors identified; transition pathways for reduced energy costs determine.

Suitable framework in place for assessment of energy performance pilots.

Industry specific knowledge gaps filled and process efficiencies identified.

Industry sector outreach programs developed to raise awareness of on-farm and sector awareness of strategies to cost effectively improve energy performance.

Medium term

High impact opportunities for increased energy performance across sectors.

Energy productivity targets and energy efficiency solutions identified.

Industry investment decisions informed by feasible solutions.

Increased industry capacity to respond to impacts of rising energy costs.

Reduced risk of early technology adoption.

Long term

Reduced industry vulnerability to rising energy costs.

Increased sector/farm profitability and increased competitiveness of NSW Primary Industries.

Strategy

In order to meet the needs of the diverse agricultural industry across the state it is proposed that two complementary strategies be implemented;

  1. a conventional energy efficiency focused initiative delivered through training and awareness campaigns focusing on the extensive and broad acre irrigated sectors, and
  2. a series of funded pilots to serve focusing on the intensive sector which will act as case studies for new and novel approaches and technology
