A NSW Government website

Seasonal Conditions survey results now available

The NSW Government 2021 Future Ready Regions funding has provided NSW DPI the opportunity to upgrade the Seasonal Conditions monitoring program by implementing improvements to the Enhanced Drought Information System (EDIS). EDIS provides the climate analysis that underpins both the NSW DPI Combined Drought Indicator and NSW State Seasonal Update.

Our first step was to collect the views of a wide variety of stakeholders on how to improve NSW DPI’s climate information and services. Whether it be improved local accuracy of data and climate networks, better ways of communicating, or strengthening linkages to drought management and relief measures.

Key findings

  • Two in five landholders told us that they experience a major drought every 4-7 years
  • The typical length of drought experienced lasted 2-3 years
  • Most relevant sources of information to help make business decisions are seasonal rainfall forecasts and weather forecasts
  • Better access to information would help landholders improve their farm management practices
