Rainfall Index (RI)

Rainfall Index responded to March and April rainfall.  

  • There has been an improvement in the Rainfall Index (RI) values since the March Update, driven by good follow-up rainfall over the past few months.
  • The impacts of early April rain events have seen modest improvements in the RI, particularly in areas receiving high rainfall totals and good follow-up rain later in April.
  • Continued rainfall through May and into June is needed to maintain or improve conditions for regions that have been experiencing low RI values for several months.
  • NSW DPI is closely monitoring areas in the Riverina and Murray LLS Regions where a declining trend is evident in the RI.
