State Seasonal Update Regional breakdown Central Tablelands LLS region
April 2024

Central Tablelands Local Land Services

Improvements in drought conditions for some areas, with additional rainfall needed for further recovery.

  • The Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) shows approximately 60% of the region being in the Drought Affected category at the end of April.
  • Areas in the east of the region have seen conditions improve in response to well-timed follow up rainfall events in April. However, further rainfall is crucial in maintaining recent improvements.
  • April rainfall has been above average for the entire region. This rainfall has improved the outlook for cropping and grazing enterprises, and winter cropping programs are underway for many regions.
  • The NSW DPI continues to closely monitor conditions in this region.

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)

Although there has been a slight decline in the plant greenness values since the last Update, levels remain above average across the region.

  • Some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies.

Individual drought indicators

Drought indicators responded to early April rainfall; however, the Rainfall Index has declined at the end of April.

  • Due to ideal timing of rainfall events the PGI is tracking well above the SWI and RI at most sites, indicative of solid agronomic conditions on the ground.
  • Continued rainfall will be needed to ensure the other indicators continue to improve.
  • Producers continue to monitor conditions closely in conjunction with forecasts and outlooks
