New citrus research scientist

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) director of horticulture, Shane Hetherington, has this week announced the appointment of Dr Dave Monks as citrus research horticulturist based at the Dareton Primary Industries Institute.

Dr Hetherington said the appointment confirms NSW DPI’s ongoing commitment to the local citrus industry.

“Dr Monks’ role will deliver scientific support and direction to citrus research programs funded by Horticultural Innovation Australia and in close association with important industry partners in the Sunraysia and Riverina,” Dr Hetherington said.

“In his role, Dr Monks will be actively involved collecting information to evaluate the agronomic performance and commercial desirability of newly introduced citrus varieties.

“Dr Monks will manage the institute’s citrus collection – the largest and most important citrus arboretum in Australia.

“NSW DPI succession plans will see Dr Monks take on the role held by Graeme Sanderson, who plans to retire in two years’ time following a 40-year career with NSW DPI.

“Ongoing research aims to ensure Australia’s citrus growers have access to the best varieties, in the fastest possible time.”

The opportunity to contribute to NSW's significant investment in Australia's citrus industry at a practical level was a major attraction for Dave Monk.

“The work delivered by NSW DPI is foundational to the future of the citrus industry, and we aim to continue to produce relevant, usable information for growers,” Dr Monk said.

“In my first few days with NSW DPI, I have met more than one hundred growers and industry representatives and look forward to meeting and developing relationships with more.”

Dr Monks has spent the last six years in the Mildura region where he managed almond research programs for the Victorian Department of Economic Development after completing doctoral studies at Lincoln University in New Zealand.
