Gavana Dairyfarm, Glenmore NSW

Gavin and Karina own and operate a dairy farm in the Sydney Basin, south west of Camden, that has been in the family since the early 1800s. From sheep and wool in the Macarthur era of Sydney farming, the family shifted to dairy in the early 1900s and currently produce 1.8 litres of milk a year.

Gavin and Karina understand that innovation is the key to business success and it is their investment in modern technology and practices that has allowed Gavana Dairyfarm to evolve into for an efficient, productive and sustainable business today. They installed digital systems that allows them to track every animal on their property from birth to removal and they invested in an environmental management system to reuse all animal waste and reduce their reliance on chemical fertilisers by 40 percent.

The strength of their commitment to the industry is evident in their commitment to the education and tourism side of their business. Through a strong social media focus, the farm attracts 1,000 international visitors annually and they have hosted over 25,000 school children since starting the program in 2007. Their drive to showcase their farm and heritage has raised awareness of agriculture in the Sydney Basin and created a greater appreciation of food production in the next generation.
