Latest winter crop weed guide out now

4 Jun 2018

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) free 2018 Weed control in winter crops publicationa highly sought after guide for local farmers, is now available.

NSW DPI development officer, Greg Brooke, said the weed guide contains up-to-date recommendations and best practice management advice for growers to apply on-farm.

“With drought conditions continuing across NSW, we caution growers to take account of residual herbicides from 2017 in-crop applications and summer fallow treatments, which may have extended the plant-back period,” Mr Brooke said.

“The guide contains information about new herbicides which have been registered in the last 12 months and new approved use patterns for herbicides this 2018 cropping season.

“Timing and application rate recommendations for weed management in winter cereals, pulses and oilseed crops are covered.

“Annual weeds typically compete with cereals and broadleaf crops during early growth stages, and it remains important to control weeds within six weeks after sowing to minimise losses.

“Early post-emergent control can often deliver higher yields than treatments applied after tillering in cereals or branching for broadleaf crops.

“Crop and pasture rotations or sequencing, rotating herbicide groups and an integrated weed management approach, which combines chemical and non-chemical methods, can help manage herbicide resistance.”

Mr Brooke said the guide is an important tool and growers should always read labels and permits before using a product and ensure compliance with specified directions and conditions.
