Thousands to wet a line today for Gone Fishing Day

The fourth annual Gone Fishing Day is set to attract thousands to the water today, offering the whole family the chance to enjoy this healthy outdoor activity as NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) hosts numerous events across the state.
Bryan VanDerWalt, DPI Recreational Fisheries Programs Manager said official DPI Gone Fishing Day events would kick off at 9am this morning, with a range of activities to suit the whole family.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re the keenest of anglers or you’ve never held a rod before – anyone can get involved today,” he said.
“DPI has organised Gone Fishing Day events Botany Bay, The Entrance North, Huskisson, Grafton, Queanbeyan Riverside and Forbes, where there will be free activities happening all day.
“Community fishing clubs across the state will also be running their own Gone Fishing Day events in their local areas.
“Experienced fishers can browse the many stalls from local fishing clubs and environmental groups, get tips from local experts, and introduce their kids to the sport by helping them get involved in the casting competitions and kids clinics.
“Newcomers to fishing can similarly get involved and enjoy the touch tanks, free goodie bags and the wide range of activities on offer.
“In exciting news for the kids, we’ve also been told that our crab mascot, Snappy, will also make an appearance with some great prizes."
Mr VanDerWalt said Gone Fishing Day is a great way for the state’s one million fishers to connect and introduce their friends and family to their valued pastime.
“Last year we had over 20,000 people attend Gone Fishing Day events in NSW, so we’re hoping to see similar numbers this year,” he said.
All Gone Fishing Day activities are free, and there is no need to register for the event. No fishing licence will be required on the day.
Gone Fishing Day is supported by the Recreational Fishing Trusts and NSW DPI.
