New FishOnline

New FishOnline will launch in early 2025, replacing paper logbooks and plastic cards.

DPIRD Fisheries has been running the Commercial Fisheries System and Service Modernisation Project to simplify the reporting process for the NSW commercial fishing industry. These improvements are designed to make reporting easier and make data more accurate and valuable to industry and DPIRD. In consultation with CommFish, the project team has taken extensive industry feedback onboard to ensure FishOnline users will see immediate improvements when using the new reporting system.

What do I need to know?

In early February 2025, the project team conducted hands-on testing sessions with commercial fishers in Coffs Harbour, Terrigal, Huskisson and Port Stephens. The input from those who attended was invaluable, and we are grateful for the time people spent with us. During these sessions, we tested two specific things - using the new application and setting up multi-factor authentication (a NSW government requirement).

While the application is easy to use, we identified that some customers may need hands-on support to activate their multi-factor authentication (MFA).

If you would like hands-on help activating your MFA before the new FishOnline goes live, please book a time with a team member using the booking portal below. Sessions were held recently in Wollongong and Moruya, as well as online. Bookings are now available at Port Stephens, Central Coast, Wallis Lake, Coffs Harbour, Maclean and Tweed.

Plenty of online videos, fact sheets, and phone support will be available for those who don’t need hands-on support or cannot make it to a session.

More information coming soon. Keep an eye on this page for news about the new FishOnline.

*If you have any questions or concerns about accessibility, please contact the project team so we can assist you and help you find solutions.

What is MFA?

New FishOnline uses multi-factor authentication (MFA) to keep your personal information secure and protect your privacy. MFA is the technical process that asks for at least two unique ways to confirm your identity when you try to sign in. One is your username and password, which is something you know. The others would be something you have, like a mobile phone, and something you are, like fingerprints or face scans. MFA is a NSW government requirement for applications, like FishOnline, that use and manage important data.

Transition to Digital Authorities

To prepare for the change, plastic cards will no longer be issued. New or replacement cards will be issued as digital authorities. All commercial fishing business cards and licences will transition to digital authorities.  You will be notified before your card is converted, and your new digital authority will be available in your FishOnline account.

FishOnline Accounts

Email addresses and mobile phone numbers are required to access the new FishOnline for security reasons. Please make sure your details are up to date in FisherDirect or by contacting the Commercial Fisheries Customer Services Team.

If you do not have a FishOnline account, we encourage you to register for FisherDirect and FisherMobile before we launch the new applications.

Reporting

All reporting will be made through the new FisherMobile application. The new reporting workflow is user-friendly, more accurate and 40% faster than the current reporting process. In preparation for the launch of the new FisherMobile, we ask you to ensure your catch and effort reporting is as up-to-date as possible.
