Testing soils for residues of persistent chemicals

Summary

Historical use of organic pesticides eg DDT, Dieldrin, means that some agricultural land is still contaminated, many years after their application.  Similarly, arsenic used in cattle and sheep dip baths caused contamination of soil around dip baths and holding pens.  To assess the level of contamination of soils, soil sampling and testing is required.  This Primefact outlines the preparation for sample collection to ensure samples are representative of the site, to provide meaningful results.  Your Local Land Services office should be contacted for advice on matters relating to soil testing and the management of contaminated sites to ensure the security of the human food chain from contaminated farm produce.
