This painting differs from many of the other Zeck illustrations because the circular portrait section is not a magnifying glass but a simple circle. It is believed that this is one of the first of the series painted by Zeck. He shows all the life stages in the magnified section with the background depicting the adult beetles on the stem of a lucerne plant and the legless larva damaging underground parts of the plant.
