Navel orange pruning methods and trial

Dr Dave Monks (Research Horticulturist) is leading the citrus component of the National Tree Crop Intensification in Horticulture Program (AS18000) funded by the Hort Frontiers Advanced Production Systems Fund. The citrus project has several components covering high-density pruning, dwarfing viroids, tree architecture and trellis production.

A high density citrus pruning experiment at NSW DPI Dareton Primary Industries Institute has been established in blocks of 16-year-old Atwood and Hockney navels. The experiment is conducted by Steven Falivene (Development Officer) and Dr Mahmud Kare (Research Officer), and, in 2022, is in its second year. Videos have been made introducing the experiment and demonstrating how each of the treatments were implemented. Click on the links below to view the videos.

The videos are:

  1. Introduction (2m)
  2. Light annual hedging (1m 20s)
  3. Heavy half tree hedging (1m 20s)
  4. Chunk pruning (2m 20s)
  5. Window layering pruning (5 min)
  6. Citrus tree architecture study introduction (1m 40s)

Other videos on the project are: Trellis citrus production trial and video (4 min): overview of the navel orange trellis production experiment
