Brogo Fert$mart Dairy Workshop

13 December 2022

In December 2022, the Clean Coastal Catchments (CCC) project funded a Fert$smart nutrient management workshop in Brogo on the south coast.

CCC Research and Development Officer, Luke Jewell, worked with Dairy NSW to design and deliver the hands-on workshop for the dairy industry.

Dairy farmers take part in a soil sampling exercise at Pearce's Dairy

A total of 23 people took part including seventeen farmers and a representative from Bega Cheese. The attendees went out into the field at Pearce's Dairy to learn first hand soil sampling techniques with Dairy Nutrition Consultant, Phil Pittolo.

During the day, Phil Pittolo, and NSW DPI Soils Researcher, Simon Clarendon, also spoke about the importance of regular soil testing and discussed the test results taken at Pearce's Dairy.

The Fert$mart planning approach aims to better match nutrient applications to pasture and crop nutrient requirements, allowing dairy farmers to save money on fertilisers without reducing production.

The Dairy Australia Fert$mart 'Dairy Soils and Fertiliser Manual' provides farmers and advisors with a logical planning approach and the technical know how to make profitable and environmentally responsible fertiliser management decisions.
