Blueberry trials soon to expand into new greenhouse site

New blueberry research greenhouse tunnels have just been completed at the Wollongbar Primary Industries Institute

Construction on our new blueberry research greenhouse tunnels has just been completed at the Wollongbar Primary Industries Institute, and work is now underway to install a state of the art fertigation system.

The tunnels will house research trials on blueberries grown in substrate, funded through the Clean Coastal Catchments (CCC) project.

As soon as the taps are ready to be turned on for fertigation, almost four hundred potted blueberry bushes will be moved on to the site.

“NSW’s blueberry industry is expanding rapidly and currently there is a lack of reliable data and information on appropriate fertiliser application rates for this crop,” explained research team leader, Dr Sophie Parks.

Pilot trials are already underway at separate sites at Wollongbar and Ourimbah, with the research team working on evidence based nitrogen recommendations specifically for Australian farmers.
