CCC funds dairy NMP training workshops

Updated December 2021

In November 2021 the Clean Coastal Catchments project teamed up with Fertcare® and Dairy NSW to roll out a series of free online training workshops on the Fertcare® technical standards for nutrient management planning (NMP) on Australian dairy farms.

The technical standards have been designed by Fertcare® and Dairy Australia to ensure that nutrient management plans and fertiliser advice provided to dairy farmers are based on objective measures that follow nationally recognised interpretation guidelines.

The NMP standards can be used to develop a dairy farm nutrient management plan that will achieve an optimal return from on-farm and commercial nutrient resources, while minimising nutrient losses to the environment, particularly around sensitive waterways.

A series of four interactive workshop webinars were funded by Clean Coastal Catchments targeting agronomists and advisors. The webinars outlined the scientific foundations that underpin dairy nutrient management planning, and how nutrient management planning links with the dairy industry's Fert$mart planning approach.

Farmer Focused Workshops

After enthusiastic feedback from the initial webinar series in 2021, Clean Coastal Catchments is now planning a suite of farmer focused physical workshops to be delivered in Autumn 2022.

Workshop dates will be announced in the New Year.

Dr Cameron Gourley, Senior Research Scientist with Soil, Water and Nutrients Consulting, compiled the NMP standards technical guidance document for Fertcare® and Dairy Australia, and will coordinate the training sessions.

Clean Coastal Catchments has partnered with Fertcare® in supporting dairy NMP standards to:

  • help raise the skills and knowledge of those involved in the supply of fertilizer and soil ameliorant products
  • ensure high quality advice is passed on to farmers, allowing them to optimise productivity while minimising environment and food safety risks
  • provide high quality training, and robust quality assurance of advisors to ensure standards are met and skills continuously improved
