August 2024

Central Tablelands Local Land Services

On-ground conditions continue to improve across the region.

  • The Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) shows approximately 2% of the region being in the Drought Affected category at the end of August.
  • August rainfall was average to above average in the north and below average in the south of the region. Rainfall received during August has helped improve conditions, particularly in the northern and central parts of the region.
  • On ground reports suggest temperatures have been warmer than is typical for late winter resulting in an early pasture growth response in some areas, particularly in legume-based pastures.
  • This continued improvement in conditions is positive for landholders implementing spring farm management decisions.

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)

Plant greenness levels remain above average for many parts of the region for the June to August period.

Some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies or from the influence of forestry operations.

The NDVI anomaly is a useful measure of vegetation density and plant health. It estimates the amount of green vegetation there is in the landscape compared to what is expected at the given time of year, against the baseline period 1987 - 2020.
