August 2024

North Coast Local Land Services

On-ground conditions continue to improve across the region.

  • The Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) shows that the majority of the region is in the Non-Drought (60%) or Recovery category (37%) at the end of August.
  • Consistent, and somewhat unseasonal rain throughout August across much of the region has seen the continued improvement in conditions.
  • On ground conditions are variable, depending on rainfall totals, with some lower lying areas experiencing inundation, causing access, pasture and livestock management issues.
  • Warmer temperatures have seen pastures respond, with good growth at some locations and positive outlooks for spring. There have been opportunities for early sowing of summer crops at other locations due to good soil moisture levels.
  • The easing of conditions is positive for landholders, with careful management decisions around livestock health and pastures a focus moving forward into spring.

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index

Plant greenness levels remain above average and improved for many parts of the region during the June to August period.

Note that some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies.

The NDVI anomaly is a useful measure of vegetation density and plant health. It estimates the amount of green vegetation there is in the landscape compared to what is expected at the given time of year, against the baseline period 1987 - 2020.

Individual Drought Indicators

The drought indicators continue to improve across all three locations in response to rainfall and warmer conditions aiding pasture growth.

  • Further rainfall will continue the improvement in conditions and maintain the good production outlooks for many locations.
  • Sustained recovery should continue into spring with further follow up rainfall.
