January 2025

Northern Tablelands Local Land Services

On-ground conditions are variable across the region.

  • Conditions have remained relatively stable since the last Update, with the region receiving average to above average rainfall during January.
  • Many areas are maintaining a good production outlook, although producers are monitoring forecasts closely for the remainder of summer.
  • Some regions continue to remain in the Drought Affected CDI category. Recent rainfall has not been sufficient to improve conditions in these regions.
  • Other areas have transitioned in the Recovery category since the last update. Further rainfall will aid a longer-term recovery from drought for these locations.
  • The drought forecast suggests that the majority of region will likely be in the Non-Drought category by the end of April 2025, with parts of the region remaining in the Drought Affected category.

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index

Plant greenness levels remain variable across the region for the November to January period.

Note that some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies.

The NDVI anomaly is a useful measure of vegetation density and plant health. It estimates the amount of green vegetation there is in the landscape compared to what is expected at the given time of year, against the baseline period 1987 - 2020.
