February 2025

Northern Tablelands Local Land Services

On-ground conditions remain variable across the region.

  • Conditions have remained relatively stable since the last Update, and many areas are maintaining a positive production outlook.
  • Much of the region received below average rainfall during February and further areas in the north and central parts of the region have transitioned to the Drought Affected CDI category. Recent rainfall has not been sufficient to improve conditions in these regions.
  • Other areas have transitioned in the Recovery category since the last update. Further rainfall will aid a longer-term recovery from drought for these locations.
  • The drought forecast suggests that that further regions will likely transition into the Drought Affected CDI category by the end of May (with low to moderate model agreement and low to moderate past accuracy).

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index

Plant greenness levels remain variable across the region for the December to February period.

  • Lower than average plant greenness anomalies have emerge in the west of the region during the past three months.
  • The extend of below average plant greenness levels has expanded in the region.

Note that some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies.

The NDVI anomaly is a useful measure of vegetation density and plant health. It estimates the amount of green vegetation there is in the landscape compared to what is expected at the given time of year, against the baseline period 1987 - 2020.
