Northern Tablelands Local Land Services

On-ground conditions improving across the region.

  • March rainfall was above to very much above average across the region. This has seen conditions improve in many areas in the NSW CDI Drought Affected CDI category, transitioning to the Recovery category since the last Update.
  • Further rainfall will aid a longer-term recovery from drought for these locations.
  • The widespread, timely rainfall will maintain the positive production outlook in both livestock and cropping enterprises.
  • The drought forecast suggests that the region will likely be in the Non-Drought category by the end of June 2025 (with moderate to high model agreement and low to moderate past accuracy).

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index

Plant greenness levels remain variable across the region for the January to March period.

  • Lower than average plant greenness anomalies have continued in the west of the region during the past three months.
  • The extend of below average plant greenness levels has expanded in the region.

Note that some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies.

The NDVI anomaly is a useful measure of vegetation density and plant health. It estimates the amount of green vegetation there is in the landscape compared to what is expected at the given time of year, against the baseline period 1987 - 2020.
