June 2025

South-East Local Land Services

Conditions remain variable across the region.

  • Recent rainfall in late May with follow-up falls in June bought welcome relief with the intensity of the drought falling for some regions.
  • The influence of the East Coast Low that recently impacted the region will be reported on in the next Update.
  • Drought conditions remain for parts of the region, due to a slower response to autumn and winter rainfall events. Cold temperatures and frosts are also limiting pasture growth in many areas.
  • Livestock producers continue to experience and manage drought conditions and on-ground fodder shortages continue in some areas.
  • The drought forecast suggests that some areas will likely see an improvement in conditions, particularly in the south and east and transition into the Recovery or Non-Drought category by the end of September. The north-west, region will likely remain in the Drought Affected NSW-CDI category (with moderate to high model agreement and moderate past accuracy).
  • The DPIRD continues to closely monitor conditions in this region.

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index

Plant greenness levels remain variable across the region for April to June period; anomalies remain below average for parts of the region..

Note that some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies or from the influence of forestry operations.

The NDVI anomaly is a useful measure of vegetation density and plant health. It estimates the amount of green vegetation there is in the landscape compared to what is expected at the given time of year, against the baseline period 1987 - 2020
